Yesterday Ms. Donk just let the 6th graders play outside because of the weird state testing schedule. Today, we finished watching the movie we started watching on Monday. I was supposed to teach, but because of Mr. Trapp's multiple announcements Ms. Donk decided that we would just watch a movie instead.
I only have about 3 weeks left with them, so I probably only have about two more classes left to teach. I'll probably switch it to jazz, since they don't get a chance to really take jazz classes during the jazz unit.

Because of state testing, the 6th graders only had a 25 minute class today, so we just watched a movie.

Thursday, April 8, 2010

The 6th grade class went well today. Instad of warming up we went straight into "One," and added on. For some reason they were extremely chatty and reluctant to learning the new, rigorous material. They wouldn't hold their formations, and whenever Ms. Donk would stop and get together the next bit of choreography, they'd start talking. When I got back to class, Mr. Trapp asked me what she does to control them. It really got me thinking, because she always has complete control of all of her classes (except when she's having a bad day, like today). One thing that helps her maintain control is that she rarely loses her temper. When the students get out of order she nicely tells them to get it together. If she has to repeat herself, her tone firms up. If they need to be told a third time, punishments come into place. Depending on her mood and the crime, the students have to do pushups. If they're constantly running their mouths, they'll get anywhere from 4-8 pushups, and as the intensity of the crime increases, so does the number of pushups. Another thing about Ms. Donk is that she has a very intimidating demeanor. While she is one of the sweetest people you'll ever meet, she has this "don't mess with me, or you'll pay" look. Also, even though she's no more than 5'3, she has about 8 pounds of muscle on each arm, and 12 pounds per leg. She looks like she can knock out anyone even if she wasn't expecting it. The last thing that I can think of that helps her maintain control is the enviornment she creates. While she makes it clear that she is the teacher and they are the students, she still creates a friendly enviornment. If someone messes up, instead of yelling and getting angry, she tries to figure out their problem and help with it. If someone says something funny, she doesn't get angry, she laughs and adds onto the joke. This makes the students feel comfortable with her so that they'll be themselves, but when they get out of hand she knows how to reel them in and control them.

For the sake of moving forward with their piece, Ms. Donk asked that I not teach today.  Instead, we went straight into "One." We ran the entire piece once, and then we added on.  The new part was extremely tricky, because it involved them changing formations, which is something they haven't done yet in the piece.  After their formations changed, Ms. Donk gave them movement that is more intricate than any movement we've done thus far.  It was so intricate that even Ms. Donk and I kept messing up.  We decided that the only way we would get it was to constantly drill it.  After doing it a few times, Ms. Donk and I finally had the movement in our bodies, so the students would be able to watch us while they were drilling it.
I've noticed that all of the stars from the modern unit aren't really shining as brightly as they did before.  Ms. Donk pointed out that while Trinity is a good dancer, and while she catches onto new movement fairly quickly, she's very lazy.  She complains about doing pushups and abdominal work, and anything else that might accelerate her heartbeat. Michelle doesn't look too happy during dance class.  I'm beginning to think she either doesn't like the class, or she just doesn't like to dance.  She does all of the steps and is doing them right, but she doesn't put anything extra into the movement.  Other students add little extra details that Ms. Donk sometimes points out, yet Michelle just does the steps and watches the clock.  Joseph, on the other hand seems to be loving jazz dance.  He always asks questions that end up being helpful to other students, he's attentive, and he always gets the steps quickly.  So...the countdown has begun.  I officially only have about 2o days of school left, which means only 20 classes left with the 6th graders.  I'm really going to miss them...

Tuesday, April 6, 2010

After a long Spring Break Mr. Trapp had lots of news and deadlines to share with our senior project class.  As a result of his many announcements, I was late to the 6th grade class today and missed their warmup.  When I got there, they were painfully trying to recall the choreography Ms. Donk set before the break.  Surprisingly, I remembered a good deal of the choreography, and I was able to refresh Ms. Donk's memory.  We ran the piece a few times, and then we added on a very small amount of material.  Ms. Donk said that tomorrow will be a complicated day, because not only will the choreography be intricate, but they will also be changing formations.  I'm looking forward to learning the new choreography, and I'm actually starting to like the piece.  Before it was stressful for me because I couldn't catch on as quickly as I normally can, but now that I've got the hang of it I really enjoy it.  The students also seem to be thoroughly enjoying it as well, once they get the hang of it.  Because of early release for seniors, I only have about 17 classes left with the 6th graders.  They've really grown on me over the semester, and I'm going to miss seeing them everyday.

Thursday, March 25, 2010

Although the sixth grade class isn't very long, it had very high moments as well as very low moments today. Instead of warming up, we went right into "One." The students weren't really paying attention, and they were very chatty. Once Ms. Donk gave them a lecture that set them straight, they still seemed very cranky. It was obvious that they didn't want to go over the old material, and Ms. Donk adding on new material was even worse for them.
For me, it was extremely frustrating because their vibe was causing me to not be able to focus. The choreography is unlike everything that I'm used to, so I need to buckle down and focus 150%, but because of them I couldn't focus. After a while, I started to ignore their energy and just focus on the material. I finally got down all of the choreography, and was able to assist them when they needed it. I also was able to do it with them so that Ms. Donk could watch and see what areas they need help on.
Michelle, one of my old favorites just isn't delivering. Lots of the movements are very sharp and quick, and she lazily does them, without putting any real effort into it. Another of my old favorites, Joseph, was having a terrible day today. He was extremely cranky and didn't want to focus.
Tomorrow the middle school athletes are going on an all-day field trip, leaving only six students in class. Ms. Donk said we'll probably watch a film or take a walk, because there's no sense in adding on to the piece when most of the class isn't there. Also, tomorrow is the last day before Spring Break, so any choreography she set on them probably wouldn't stick anyway...

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

Today in the 6th grade class Ms. Donk decided to finish showing them the Alvin Ailey video they started watching yesterday. (They didn't dance because of a crazy schedule because of state testing). Hopefully tomorrow we'll be back to dancing so that we can set some of the dance before we leave for Spring break.

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

Unfortunately because of state testing I could not assist the 6th graders today. However, they watched a movie, so they didn't add on to their dance, so I didn't miss anything.
I'm not sure if Ms. Donk wants me to teach tomorrow, but I'll come prepared just in case. I will create a modern warmup, and do some simple across the floor choreography.

Monday, March 22, 2010

The 6th grade class today was extremely annoying and frustrating. From the moment they walked in class they were very chatty and noisy. Thankfully, they calmed down some for warmup. After warmup, we attempted to run through the choreography Ms. Donk set on them last Thursday (we weren't there Friday because of our Spring Dance Concert). After a tiring weekend, we couldn't remember much of the choreography. After a while, we pieced it together and made up something very close to what we did last week. While we were getting that choreography back, the 6th graders were talkative and unfocused. It was annoying, because the choreography is so intricate that missing one detail can throw you completely off, so their full attention was needed. Once we got that choreography back, we ran through it a few times with the music, and then added on. That was also annoying, because for some reason or another I couldn't remember the steps. It wasn't that I couldn't do them, but when it came time to run the whole thing, I kept blanking out. I know a part of it is that I'm still tired from the concert, but I think another part of it is that I'm not used to doing choreography that is so strict and placed. I'll have to get over that really quickly, and adapt to the new choreography so that I can be of assistance.
During warmup, some of the stars from the modern section of the class weren't shining at all. Michelle, the experienced dancer, was being extremely shy about some of the new movements Ms. Donk is requiring them to do. When it comes time for rib cage isolations, or hip rolls, Michelle is completely embarassed, and doesn't do them full out. Joseph is also a little uncomfortable, but I think that's mostly because he's a male. However, Trinity is still holding up. She wasn't in class on Thursday, so I made sure to check her out today. As expected, she was great. She isn't shy about doing new movements, and she doesn't hold back.
I'm looking forward to this new unit, because while it'll be a challenge for them, it'll also be a challenge for me to stay focused. Hopefully I can do it...

Jazz it Up

Jazz today with the 6th graders was really fun. It was interesting watching them work at a new warm up. Most of them were pretty bashful, but a few showed promise. The jazz unit will be totally different from the modern was, which proved to be very shocking for them today. They were understandably afraid to fully isolate their rib cages and roll their hips (especially Joseph.) After warmup, we started working on choreography. Ms. Donk is setting an original piece on them that is based off of "One," from A Chorus Line. The choreography is so much more intricate than the last piece they did, and if you miss one beat or step, you're completely thrown off. Even I was having some difficulty with remembering the little bit of choreography we worked on today. But even though it was tough, they kept at it and didn't give up, and that's what I like to see. They were persistent when I know they didn't want to be. And after a while, they began to get the hang of it. It's going to be a really fun piece once we have the movement into our memory, and don't have to worry about trying to remember what comes next.
Another difference between this piece and the last is that this piece involves a prop. Each dancer has a top hat that they use on almost every count of the piece so far. This also presents another challenge for them, because most of them have never used props before. They were tempted to play with the hats when they should have been paying attention, but after they saw how intricate the choreography was they immediately focused. This new unit should be a fun one...

Wednesday, March 17, 2010

Today the 6th graders had their performance. When I went into the gym before their performance they were SO nervous. They were all jittery and couldn't keep still.  I tried my best to calm them down, but it didn't really work. Even when Ms. Donk talked to them and tried to calm them down, they wouldn't loosen up. They had a few minutes to sit and wait while the principal made some announcements, and by the time it was finally time to perform they seemed like they chilled out a little. The performance went SO well! There were a few mess ups, but they played them off very well (because of their preparedness). They played them off so well that the mess ups looked like they were a part of the piece.
After the performance they looked so bummed. They said they were so disappointed in themselves because of the mess ups, and because a few dumb kids were laughing. The feedback Ms. Donk and I got was amazing. Everyone LOVED the performance, students and teachers included. While they were performing, I videotaped the performance and we watched it later. Even after watching it, some of them still had negative things to say. While watching the performance did change some of their opinions, some were still saying it wasn't good.
Trinity was great. She had a little mess up, but she played it off well and other than that she was great. Michelle was also good, she had a rather large mess up, but she probably wins first place for playing it off. Joseph was also really good. The whole group really was good, they worked together as a team, (which is really important for dance groups) and their performance energy was great. Overall, the performance went really well.

Tuesday, March 16, 2010

Lately there hasn't been much to reflect on with the 6th graders. And unfortunately, today the case is the same. Once again we went to the gym to run the piece. We ran through it once with music, and then went back to the dance studio and went over some performance etiquette. We talked about what they should wear, how they should act, what to expect, etc. They still seem to be pretty nervous about performing for their peers tomorrow. Hopefully they won't choke, and forget the steps, or hold back because of fears of what their peers will say.
Ms. Donk will tape the performance tomorrow, and during class time they will watch and critique and reflect on it. (So I won't be teaching.) Then, starting on Thursday we're going to have a jazz class. We were supposed to start on the choreography for the jazz piece on Friday, however neither Ms. Donk or I will be in school Friday because of our Spring dance performance. So, we'll start jazz on Thursday and the second piece Monday. Hopefully all goes well in the performance tomorrow, I know that if they are confident in themselves they'll be great.

Monday, March 15, 2010

Unfortunately, Ms. Donk forgot her iPod at home today, so we couldn't start on the jazz unit. So, we went to the gym (where they'll be performing it on Friday) and walked through it for spacing. This spacing rehearsal really helped them out, because we could give them lines on the gym floor as to where to be for certain sections of the piece. Without this rehearsal the piece would have looked crazy, because there would be dancers all over the place forgetting all about their formations. But at the same time, it was really nice watching the piece in a larger space than the dance studio. Ms. Donk said that tomorrow if the gym is free we will go back and run through it a few times with music.

Thursday, March 11, 2010

Instead of dancing today we watched the video of their piece. Ms. Donk asked them to write down a few critiques and a few good things they noticed. It was interesting seeing the piece on film, because I got a totally different perspective. Also, it was interesting seeing what they thought they needed to work on, and what about it they liked. The majority of their comments were negative, like "we weren't on the music," or "I forgot a step." The only positive thing they really said was that they liked the choreography. I guess the semi-performance yesterday didn't help their confidence as much as I thought it did. I just hope they don't get shy once they get in front of their peers, because the piece really does look great.

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

Once again, there isn't much to share about the 6th grade class today. We did a regular warmup, and ran the piece. They got a sense of what it was like to perform it, because the middle school principal was sitting in on the class. I really think this boosted their confidence, because they looked great. I think being in front of an audience, even though it was a tiny one, helped them. I think once they get to their performance on Wednesday, they'll be more than comfortable performing it for their peers.
We didn't get to watch the film of the piece because we didn't have enough time. Ms. Donk said tomorrow we'll watch the video, and correct any problems that come out in the video. Then, tomorrow is the last day that will be devoted to rehearsing. Monday we will start on the jazz unit, and start their new "Broadway" piece. Next Wednesday it's back to teaching for me...I haven't decided if I should shift to jazz as well, or if I should stick with giving them modern classes. I probably will stay with modern, because I have no experience with teaching jazz dance. I want to create a piece of my own, that I will add on to every week, almost like a goodbye piece from me to them. I really am going to miss them once the school year is over.

Tuesday, March 9, 2010

There isn't much to share about the 6th grade class today. They ran the entire piece, (which is a little over 13 minutes) and then ran it again so that Ms. Donk could videotape it. Tomorrow we're going to watch the video so that they can see things that they are doing wrong. This really will help them, because not only can they see what they're doing wrong, but they can also hear musical cues without having to worry about entering right on the cue. Also, they'll be able to see some spacial issues they're having. But I think the most important thing that the video will do is it will boost their confidence. Right now they're really nervous about performing the piece, but they shouldn't be because it really looks great. I think once they see themselves performing it they'll be more excited to perform it. As a result of a schedule change tomorrow, they won't perform until next Wednesday. So, starting tomorrow (if time allows) they will start on their jazz unit of the class. They'll still run the piece once each day to keep it fresh, but we're finally moving on. It should be fun moving on to a new style, and hopefully some new stars will come up in the jazz unit.

Monday, March 8, 2010

Last Friday while I was at the elementary campus, the 6th graders finished the last section of their piece. I must admit I was a little sad because I wasn't there to learn it first hand, but I caught on quickly. They are performing Wednesday, so that leaves tomorrow for their last rehearsal. Today they ran through the entire piece, drilling certain sections until they finally got it. We still have a few sections that need to be drilled tomorrow, but all in all the piece really is looking lovely. I'm looking forward to watching their performance. It'll be interesting to see if certain students who never really gave it much in class will give it their all in the performance. It should also be interesting to see if the stars  are performers. I know they're all really nervous about performing for the rest of the middle school, so it should be interesting to see if that has an effect on their performance.
After their performance they will shift from modern to jazz. It really will be fun for me, because jazz is one of my favorite styles of dance. They will be learning a new piece, and having another performance somewhere down the line.

Crazy Little Kids

Today I went to the elementary school to assist Mrs. Birdsinger with her 4th grade class. Those kids are CRAZY. I swear they've got more energy than one can fathom. From the moment they saw me they were all like "HI!" or "Who are you?" One girl I'd never met before hugged me and wouldn't let go. Another girl told me I was her new best friend. Mrs. Birdsinger said that since today was their last day she would basically let them build their own class. In other words, she let them pick their favorite exercises from the class and run them again. It was interesting watching them make their list of favorites. They chose everything from the Nutcracker to improvisation to dancing to MC Hammer's "Can't Touch This." Watching them dance really is amazing, because they have so much energy they know how to channel it into dancing. When they are dancing, it's amazing to watch because they are so into it and are having so much fun it's like they're unstoppable. Unfortunately, they don't know how to stop talking when necessary, so they lost lots of class time that could have been spent having more fun.
Also, they're really versatile. They went from a hip hop combination to traveling across the floor to free-styling to the Nutcracker. They also did something called "The Helping Dance," where they are all on the floor making shapes and the leader walks around and picks up one person and then that person picks up another person and so on. It was interesting watching their creativity in their shape choices.
As for me, I didn't know much of the set combinations they had, however most of it was the same movement repeated again and again, so it was easy for me to catch on. When they went across the floor I kept them quiet and ready to go once the group before them was finished dancing. For the free-styling I free-styled with them (and had a blast). Overall it was a great class, and we all had lots of fun. But even though I had so much fun, I still missed my 6th graders...

Thursday, March 4, 2010

Instead of continuing on with the final section of the piece, Ms. Donk decided to tweak the section where Joseph brings on all the girls. When she said tweak, she really meant complicate. She changed the entire thing, and made it extremely intricate and brisk. The students were getting frustrated because they had to keep drilling it in order to get it. I was getting frustrated because I couldn't really be of much assistance, and Ms. Donk was getting frustrated because it wasn't looking like she wanted it to. Hopefully tomorrow she'll be able to finish that part of the section, and make progress on the section. I won't be there tomorrow because I'm going to venture over to the elementary campus to assist. I really hope the 6th graders get that part of the section together tomorrow so that they can move on. Hopefully they'll finish it tomorrow and have Monday and Tuesday for rehearsal days.
Before Ms. Donk started tweaking the fourth section, they ran the first three sections of the piece. They really are looking fabulous; they're getting comfortable with the choreography and now they're beginning to dance it. A few sections need to be cleaned up, but overall the whole piece looks really nice.
Ms. Donk said if time allows she'll videotape the dance tomorrow, so that they can watch it and see their mistakes. This will probably help them a lot, because instead of just hearing Ms. Donk say what they're doing wrong, they'll actually be able to see it.

Wednesday, March 3, 2010

I taught the 6th grade class today. It went well, we started off with a fairly traditional warmup. After warmup we did abs, and then went across the floor. The across the floor portion of the class was interesting, because I felt like the material I made up for them wasn't hard at all. In fact, it was easier than some of the things Ms. Donk has given them. However, some of them really seemed to be struggling with it. I broke it down many times, and answered all of their questions and kept asking if they had more. Maybe I judged the level of it wrong, because I know they aren't afraid to ask questions when they have them. Even though some of them were struggling, I will probably give them the same material next week and add onto it. I want them to continue challenging themselves, not just when Ms. Donk is teaching.
I feel like I'm repeating myself, but Trinity is awesome. It really is mesmerizing watching her dance, because she's so young. I'm almost to the point where I'm sad because I'll be leaving this year, so I won't get to watch her grow over the years. Not only did the combination appear to be a breeze for her, but she was turning simple runs into graceful leaps, and adding dynamics into the material that some dancers my own age can't grasp. And the funny thing is that she doesn't even know she's doing it, because it's all natural. After class I told her how good she looked and she almost seemed shocked hearing it.
Michelle is blossoming as well, I feel like she really has improved since I started observing her earlier in the year. She's getting stronger, which is always nice to watch. The problem with her is that while she has gotten better, she just does the steps. She doesn't really put much energy and uumph into it. But she's improving, and she's still young, so I'm sure she'll get it one day.
Another student I'd like to introduce you to is Zariane, she's an extremely tall girl, with long limbs. She has the body to be a dancer, but before Ms. Donk's class, she had never stepped into a dance class before. She tries really hard, and asks lots of questions, which shows she's interested. But it's obvious that she wasn't born to be a dancer. While I'm sure she's aware of this, she still tries really hard, and she makes me proud. That's probably one of my favorite kind of dancer, the one who has almost no potential, but still busts their butt to be the best they can.

Tuesday, March 2, 2010

Today was probably the most fun class to date. We started class by stretching ourselves instead of doing a traditional warmup. Then, we jumped right into the fourth section. We gave Joseph his solo, which is really brisk but also really fun. It's nice working with him because he's had professional training. He catches on quickly, and isn't afraid to ask questions when he needs to. At the end of his solo, he picks up each girl and brings her on stage. Working out the lifts was really a lot of fun. Each dancer was different, some were extremely comfortable while others were so timid they barely got across the floor.
Watching Trinity again today I noticed she has mastered something that most 6th grade beginners can't: she can point her feet! And not only can she point them, but she actually does point them every time they leave the floor. She captures my attention every time she is on stage.
Another eye catcher is Michelle. She's loosening up with the choreography. Ms. Donk gave her a more challenging lift and she really looks beautiful doing it. Like Joseph she's also very mature.
I'm really going to miss this class. They're a great group of kids, and I enjoy working with them. This sounds really cheesy, but just like I'm sure I've impacted their lives (well at least their dance lives) they've impacted mine too.

Monday, March 1, 2010

The 6th graders were back today, and some who were groggy and ready for the weekend on Friday were back to their normal selves today. Today we did a really quick warmup, and then went straight into the fourth section. Unfortuantely, we still haven't finished the piece. So, we are pushing back the performance date until next Wednesday or the week after. Ms. Donk says she really hopes we'll be able to finish tomorrow or Wednesday. I really am excited for the finished product. I can't wait to see them run all four sections together, and I can't wait for the performance.
Little Ms. Trinity is really trucking along. Everyday she's looking better and better doing her complex solo. She's getting really comfortable with it, so she's starting to let go and really dance it. It's amazing watching her dance, because you'd swear she's been taking formal classes for years. It just so happens that later in the fourth section Ms. Donk gave a group sone of the same choreography from Trinity's solo. Once they were trying to learn it, they got winded quickly and they kept bruising and beating themselves up. In the locker room after class I heard one of them telling Trinity "you make it look so easy." And she really does, she really is an inspiration.
Today class stopped just short of Joseph's solo. It should be interesting helping him learn the choreography, because he's so trained and talented. The difference between his talent and Trinity's talent is that his came directly and solely from training, while Trinity's is purely natural.
I'm beginning to see that I really enjoy working with kids and teaching dance. It almost feels like this is what I'm supposed to do. I enjoy it so much that I actually look forward to going into class and working with them everyday. I'm really going to miss them once this year is over...

Saturday, February 27, 2010

Yesterday the 6th graders were swell. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to finish the fourth section. This really is going to have an impact on their performance. This takes away a full rehearsal class. While the dance does look really lovely, they still need to clean a good bit of it up. They need to rehearse certain parts that are more challenging than others. They're pretty comfortable with the third section, but the fourth is a different story. In my opinion, Ms. Donk should reschedule the performance until the next Wednesday. That way, they'll be much more comfortable with all of the choreography, and they'll also have time to clean.
After class on Thursday, Ms. Donk had a talk with Joseph. Yesterday in class he was much better, he wasn't complaining about anything or bossing anyone around. After class he apologized to Ms. Donk and promised to be on his best behavior from then on. He even said he went home and talked to his dad about the talk he had with Ms. Donk. He said his father has told him the same thing many times before, but hearing it from Ms. Donk really hit home. He really is very mature for a 6th grader. He's becoming one of my favorites...

Thursday, February 25, 2010

The 6th graders were lovely today. They only worked on the fourth section of the dance in hopes of finishing it. We didn't finish it, but we came close. We should definitely be able to finish it tomorrow. That way they'll have Monday and Tuesday's classes to rehearse it before their performance on Wednesday.
Joseph had another bad day today. He was bossing people around, trying to direct them at the same time that Ms. Donk was. He also kept reminding Ms. Donk of the amount of time left in class, as if she didn't know what time to let them out. Also, he was complaining that some students couldn't catch onto some choreography right away. He can be a bit of a brat sometimes, but on other days he's a great helper.
Trinity is blossoming. She's getting comfortable with her brisk and tough solo, and she's really looking lovely dancing it. If she sticks with it she's going to be great, there's no doubt about that.

Wednesday, February 24, 2010

As a result of their performance being next week, Ms. Donk asked that I wait until next week to teach my class. We didn't start class with a warm-up today, instead Ms. Donk gave me the floor to give the students corrections on the first three sections of their dance. They were really receptive to the corrections, and they even gave me a big "thank you!" when we were finished. Then, we ran the piece so they could apply the corrections. It really is coming along, and they really are growing into a great group of dancers. Then we added onto the fourth section of the dance, which is extremely rigorous. They need much more help with the fourth section than they have with any other section of the dance, because of the increased speed and level of choreography. I'm working with them on a more individual level than ever before.
I've noticed that the only male in the class, Joseph, seems to be a very mature dancer. Come to find out, he takes private tap and ballet lessons. I've noticed that he's a real leader in the class, and he's very helpful to other students if they're having trouble with something. I like Joseph, but he can be a little bossy. He bosses people around, and often suggests things to Ms. Donk (in a rude manner). But at the same time, whenever he messes up it's like he doesn't want to hear anything about it. When I gave him a correction today he said "well Ms. Donk told me to do it this way." It was ironic because Ms. Donk was the one who told me to give him that correction. I've got to watch out for Joseph; hopefully one day soon he'll realize that he doesn't know everything, and still has a LOT to learn.

Tuesday, February 23, 2010

Class today was much less eventful than it was yesterday. We warmed up and then went straight into the piece. We ran the first three sections, and went through and added onto the fourth. The fourth section is much more difficult than the other three.  Also, so far it contains only duets and solos. It's nice to see them dance on an individual level. Some are shining, while some seem embarrassed. Ms. Donk gave Trinity an extremely tough piece of choreography. Not only is it tough, but it's also very fast. It seems as if she's scared to fully try it and see what happens. I drilled it with her a few times in class, and she seemed to be doing better with it. Then, when we ran the piece, it was like she froze up. It'll be interesting to see how she is once she's more comfortable with the choreography.
Tomorrow I teach once again, and I'm a little nervous. I have to build an entirely new class for them, since they already added the old choreography into their piece. I'll do a longer warmup, and add in some across the floor material. Then, I'll teach them a short combination. Hopefully it will go well.

The class today with the 6th graders was cut short because of a minor incident. One girl stepped on a piece of glass and started bleeding. Then, when Ms. Donk and I looked around the floor to see if there was any more class, we found lots of it. We spent about ten minutes of class time sweeping up broken glass. Other than that, the class went well. We warmed up, and started reviewing the dance. As we were about to start the fourth section, the glass incident happened. After all of the glass was picked up, we continued on with the piece. We started the fourth section of the dance. Before class Ms. Donk hoped that she would be able to finish the fourth section tomorrow, so that the students would have a full week of rehearsal classes before their performance next Wednesday. We will probably finish the fourth section Thursday, because I am teaching Wednesday. Losing this rehearsal day could be harmful. However, I think they'll be able to pull it together and perfect it for Wednesday.
As for me teaching Wednesday, I have to come up with a totally new class. My previous classes were built around me teaching them the choreography for the third section of their dance. Now, I'll probably give them a longer warmup and do some across the floor exercises. I may even create a new chunk of choreography to throw on them.

Totally shut Down

After Mardi Gras break, the 6th graders, Ms. Donk and I were all very exhausted. They didn't feel like dancing, and they weren't in the best of moods. To top it off, Ms. Donk gave them a more challenging warmup than she usually gives. Because she was extremely tired and not feeling well, I got the pleasure of demonstrating the first exercise multiple times. They tried it, and halfway through Ms. Donk stopped the music and said they weren't putting enough energy into it. Once again, I got the pleasure of demonstrating what it looks like with the correct amount of energy. After the warmup, they ran their piece. Once they got to the 3rd section which they finished the last class before the break) it was like their brains completely shut down. Not only did they forget it, but Ms. Donk and I were having a hard time remembering it as well. We stumbled through it trying to get back the counts until class was over. Unfortunately, I won't be in class tomorrow because of a doctor's appointment. Hopefully by Monday our brains will be back on, and we can get back the 3rd section and drill the 4th. Then, we will be able to drill the entire piece and pick a performance date, and prepare for the performance.

I didn't assist the 6th graders yesterday because of a meeting I had to attend with Mr. Trapp and the arts coordinator. When I went into class today, Ms. Donk informed me that she added my choreography into the third section of their piece. I was excited to see how it flowed with the other material. Once they ran the piece, I saw that they tweaked a few things in the choreography to make it work with the music. But overall, the choreography works nicely with the material they've already been given. Also, they look really nice performing it. Today we finished the third section of the dance. It really is amazing to me that some of these kids have never danced before, yet they remember over ten minutes of choreography.
Once we return from the Mardi Gras break, Ms. Donk is going to choreograph the final section of the piece. After they have learned all of the material, they will probably drill it for about a week or so. Then, it's performance time. They have to perform it in front of their peers at the middle school assembly. Some are really excited about it, and some are dreading it. Also after the break I will have to come up with a new class to teach them.
After they perform this piece they'll be shifting gears. Instead of focusing on modern dance, they will be focusing on jazz. It'll be nice to work on something new, and see them challenge themselves. It'll also be interesting to see if Trinity is versatile, and if Michelle tightens up or loosens up with the style change.

I didn't teach the 6th graders today, because of a meeting with Mr. Trapp and the advisor of arts.  We talked about how both of my senior projects are progressing, and overall they're pleased. My "academic" senior project is going well, Mr. Trapp feels like I'm a role model to them, not only in dance class but around school as well. It's nice to feel like I'm someone who's looked up to by younger kids.  As for my CA senior project, the team of dance teachers also appear to be pleased with me.  They think my material is strong and creative, and they're excited to see the finished product.
Overall, dealing with two senior projects has been very stressful. Having to choreograph an entire ten minute performance isn't easy for an amateur  choreographer.  Also, constantly having to adapt myself to my forever changing project for Mr. Trapp has been stressful as well. But I'm almost to the finish line, and I don't have time to sulk on how stressful a ride it's been. Actually, the dance teachers being pleased with my work gave me an extra boost of confidence. I'm not even more ready to finish choreographing and present my final project.

Once again, I taught the sixth graders today. The class went well, we warmed up and added onto the piece I've been teaching them.  They really are a talented group of dancers.  They're getting more into the choreography now that they've done it several times.  It's nice to see them enjoy it and really get into it.
I separated the class into two groups, and each group performed the choreography a few times. Trinity and Michelle really are good dancers. For me, Trinity is more enjoyable to watch, because of the natural talent she has. She really has captured dynamics that some dance technicians can't even get. She knows where to accent moves, where to slow certain things down, and where to use her head.  It really is amazing watching her dance, knowing that she's had no formal training. Michelle goes to one of the best "dance schools" in New Orleans, and she's also enjoyable to watch.  However, she hasn't grasped the dynamics that Trinity has. But honestly, I feel like she too (Michelle) has the potential to grow into a wonderful dancer.
It really is a great feeling to see how I'm impacting their lives (well, their dance lives at least). Everyday they all greet me, and they really seem to enjoy my presence. They really are a great group of kids, and they make my time there fulfilling and worthwhile.

The 6th grade class went well today. I was of more assistance today because Ms. Donk's son (who is two) was with her. As a result, she had limited mobility and needed me to demonstrate the new choreography. We're starting to piece together the third section of the dance, which will consist of the choreography I made up for them, and choreography they will make up. As a result, I will be working more closely with the kids than I normally do.
Michelle seems to be opening up a little more. Every time she sees me she's very cordial, and when we rehearse the choreography I set on them she always wants to do it in groups (which means she wants her chance to shine). She's even starting to break through with the choreography in their dance. Possibly because she's getting comfortable with it. I also noticed that whenever I watch her dance, she looks nervous and starts forgetting the steps. I don't think I'm intimidating her, so it must be that she's trying to impress me.

Thursday, February 4, 2010

Today the 6th grade class went well.  Instead of working on their piece, Ms. Donk decided to give them a full dance class.  I was of great assistance, because the material they were learning was very challenging for them.  They needed me to demonstrate it for them multiple times, and they were totally comfortable asking me to do it again or work on it with them.  Cocky little Ms. Michelle was going across the floor like she had the material in a bag, (she didn't) and when Ms. Donk gave her a correction, it was like she was totally embarrassed.  I think she feels that she has a major advantage over the rest of the students because she's taken dance before.  While she is good, her cocky attitude makes you overlook her dancing skills.  On the other hand, little Ms. Natural Dancer Trinity was doing very well in class today.  I'm starting to watch her more closely, and she really does have lots of talent.  Actually, I think she has more talent that she thinks she does, because she doesn't work up to her full potential.  Once she realizes how good she is, and starts utilizing her talents, she will soar past many dancers her age who have been training for years.

The Lovely Trinity

Today was a much calmer day with the 6th graders. Ms. Donk was here today, so they were back to their normal selves. I taught again today for about half the class, and gave them the other half to rehearse their dance. While they were reviewing/performing the choreography they learned for their classmates and Ms. Donk, they were much more quiet. They performed it once, and then Ms. Donk and I gave them feedback. We both pretty much told them the same thing, to really dance the combination. Once they did it again, it was much better. They really are a talented group.
Trinity, a student that Ms. Donk and I agreed that we need to keep our eye on will be a regular throughout these postings. We first really noticed her today, when she broke out of her shell and really started dancing. After class Ms. Donk asked her if she had ever taken a dance class before this one. Surprisingly, she had not. Trinity really has true potential, and she's never taken dance before, so it's all natural talent. Those are the students I really love watching, because even though they aren't technically perfect, they dance with so much passion that it makes you ignore the technique. Over time Trinity really can evolve into a great dancer.

A Stressful Day

After class today I honestly found a new respect for middle school dance teachers.  Today I had to take over and teach the class on my own with about 45 minutes warning.  The teaching part wasn't hard at all because I just used my warmup exercises and combination from last week.  However, because Ms. Donk wasn't there the students were a lot more chatty than they normally are.  They were asking to use the bathroom and get water every few minutes (something Ms. Donk doesn't allow at all).  I really felt like they were trying to take advantage of the fact that Ms. Donk wasn't there but also that I'm much closer to their ages than Ms. Donk is.  It got so bad that I had to stop teaching a few times, and repeatedly ask specific students to stop talking.  Also, after class I had to sit them down and explain to them that although I am not Ms. Donk, they still should respect me and not try and take advantage of me.  I also threatened them that the next time they are talkative I will make them do pushups (which is a method Ms. Donk uses that is extremely effective).  I just hope Ms. Donk never has to miss another day of school...

Monday, February 1, 2010

The 6th grade class went well today.  We did the usual, warmup and then worked on the piece.  As the time goes on, I learn more names and they become more comfortable with me.  Once again, I will teach them this Wednesday.  I plan on doing the same warmup as the last class, (including lots of abdominal work and pushups) and go over the combination I taught them.  If there is enough time, I'd like to add on to the combination.
After class today, Ms. Donk told Melissa and I that for the fourth section of their piece, she will do none of the choreographing.  The entire fourth section will be choreographed by myself, Melissa, and the students.  This will probably call for more one on one time with the kids than I've ever had before.  I'm excited to work with them even more closely than I have before, and I'm excited to see what the future holds for me and the 6th graders...

The Usual

Today the class with the 6th graders went well, pretty normal. We did the usual: warm-up and they ran their piece and added more choreography. However, I did notice that they feel more comfortable around me after yesterday. They randomly ask me for help more often, and they greet me with big smiles and waves. I feel like I'm getting to know them all personally much more now that I'm assisting them everyday. I know the vast majority of their names, and I know what to expect from everyone. Because I'll be teaching them once a week, Mr. Trapp and Ms. Donk want me to create a full lesson plan for their class.
Tomorrow I will visit the elementary school for the first time since winter break. I'm excited to meet the new group of kids, but it's almost sort of sad because I won't be with the 6th graders...

A First Class Success

Today was by far the best class I've ever had with the sixth graders.  When they first came in, they were quite rambunctious, so I was nervous.  Then once we started class they started to settle down a little, so I loosened up.  Teaching dance is something that comes naturally to me,but for some reason today it came much more naturally than it has before.  From the very moment I started teaching, I felt beyond comfortable.  In the past, I've taught classes to my peers that went well, but I wasn't truly comfortable letting go.  But today I was just myself, and I let my personality shine through much more than I have in the past with them.  They also grew more comfortable with me, they were asking questions without hesitation, and they let go without holding back.
The girl who reminds me of myself (who I have now named Michelle) also seemed to let go a little more.  When I would ask if they wanted me to teach them more or go over what we already learned, she kept wanting to go on and learn more.  She really made me proud today, she worked harder than I've ever seen her work.
As for the class itself, we started with a simple warm-up, somewhat close to what they've been doing.  Then, we did abdominal work and pushups.  I know they absolutely hate doing abs and pushups, but it's necessary to be strong in order to be a strong dancer.  With that in mind, I made them do more abs and pushups than Ms. Donk normally does.  After class, Michelle said "thanks for being our trainer instead of dance teacher," and then she sneered at me.  After abs and pushups, I started teaching them the combination that will eventually be inserted into their piece.  They seemed to enjoy it, and caught on fairly quickly.  All in all, I really felt like I did a good job, and I felt much more connected to them than ever before.

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

I felt much more useful today with the 6th grade class; they started working on the second section of their piece, which is much more challenging than the first.  Because the movement is so challenging for them, they constantly need individual help, which makes my assistance necessary more often.  I started working with them on an individual level for the first time today.  Also, today they felt more comfortable with asking me to break down a step for them.
Tomorrow is the big day, I'll teach my first class.  Overall I think it will go fairly well, and I think they'll be very receptive.  I've planned out the entire class, from warm-up to the combination.  Since the combination is going to be inserted into their piece, I want to make it fun for them but also enjoyable to watch.  Hopefully all will go well and the combination will be a hit.

Monday, January 25, 2010

Today was just another ordinary day with the 6th graders.  We warmed up, and went over/added on to their piece.  After class I talked to Ms. Donk about the class I am teaching Wednesday, and showed her some of the material I've already come up with.  She said that since my choreography is fairly close to what they've been working on in class, we'll add it into the second section of their dance.
I'm actually pretty excited to work with them Wednesday, because so far it's just been me demonstrating moves and helping them when they need it.  I've never really gotten to know them on a personal level; I'm usually just the quiet assistant who stands in the front of the class and demonstrates.  However, because I haven't been extremely hands on it's given me an opportunity to observe all of the students, and I feel like I know their individual movement ranges pretty well.  In other words, I know what to expect from everyone; I know which ones to expect a lot from, and I also know which ones will probably stand there and look like they just lost their best friend (literally).
As far as the class itself, I plan on doing a simple warm-up, consisting of plies, tondues, abdominal work, and probably planks or pushups.  I'll most likely then move right into teaching the combination, so that they can really get into it and learn the material.  Since it's going into their piece I don't want to make it a repeat of what they've been doing in their dance already, but I don't want to make it too challenging for them.  I've still got a good bit of working and planning ahead of me...

Friday, January 22, 2010

Today the class with the 6th graders went well.  They do the same warm-up everyday, and I always feel very helpful during warm-up because I know it, and I'm there in the front of the class for them to watch in case they forget what comes next.  Also, I'm helpful in the sense that Ms. Donk doesn't have to be at the front of the class showing the exercises, she can walk around and give individual attention because I'm there for the students to watch.  After warm-up, they worked on their dance, (which I now know) and added a little more onto the end.  I was helpful there too because I'm there to demonstrate the new material as much as they need it, while Ms. Donk can move on and give new material to another group.  All in all, I feel like I'm being very helpful to both the students and to Ms. Donk.

Next Wednesday I will teach my first class.  As I start to plan it, I want to make it something that will be enjoyable to them, but I still want to keep in within the realm of beginner's modern dance.  I'll probably do a simple warm-up, somewhat close to what they've been doing, and then have an across the floor combination that builds on itself as the class goes on.  Hopefully I'll come up with something good...

Thursday, January 21, 2010

Today I realized that the 6th graders really are a talented, fun group.  Ms. Donk and I both agree that they are more focused and hardworking than the last group.  Earlier in the week they started learning a piece influenced by Paul Taylor's Esplanade.  When I came in today, they had already learned a decent amount, but it was easy for me to catch on and learn.  Although I didn't know the entire piece, I was still able to pick it up quickly and assist them in learning the new material.

After class, Ms. Donk explained that since I will be assisting daily,  she wants me to create a lesson plan for the students, and actually teach them once a week.  While I am looking forward to it, I feel it will be somewhat of a challenge.  I don't want to simply copy the class she gives them and teach it, but I also don't want to make anything too difficult for them.  I also want them to warm up to me more, and I think making a fun, exciting class is a way of getting them to do that.
I have my eye on a few of the students, one in particular reminds me a lot of myself at that age. She has loads of potential, but when she dances she doesn't utilize it, she just does the steps for the sake of doing them.  She obviously has taken dance classes before this one, and I think she likes to dance, but it's hard to tell.  On top of that, she has a cocky air about her, which is very odd.  I'm looking forward to getting to know her better, and hopefully pulling some passion out of her...

starting all over..

As I assisted the new bunch 6th graders last week I realized that there were lots of more talented, experienced dancers in the bunch.  As a result, they're more focused on improving themselves, so they're less chatty.  They seem like a great group, and I'm eager to start working with them.

After having a meeting with Mr. Trapp today about the status of my project as a whole, we both were not pleased with the direction it is headed, which is straight downhill.  We decided to ditch the research paper on studying the processes of multiple famous artists, and focus on something more practical and realistic for the time left in the school year.
For the remainder of this school year I will work very closely with the 6th grade class.  Instead of once a week, I will assist them everyday, and get more involved in their curriculum.  I will take on more of a teacher's role than I have before.  Also, I will blog about my experiences daily, which will include a reflection of the class, and preparation thoughts for the next day's class.
For the research aspect of my project, I will research what it takes to teach dance to a younger student, and relate my findings in my blog updates.
